Mastering the Mat: My Intermediate Pilates Workout for Technique and Progression

Hey everyone!

This morning, I kicked off my day with a 20-minute Pop Pilates class on my Peloton App with the amazing Kristen McGee. Sadly, she just left Peloton today, which is such a bummer because her classes are always my favorite! In this post, I'll highlight some of the exercises we tackled this morning with Kristen and share a few tips for you to try at home.

Pilates always works to improve strength, balance, coordination, and mobility, making it an amazing workout or complement to your other fitness goals. So, grab your mat, give these moves a go, and let me know what you think!

Plank: Nothing about a plank is easy, but is always super effective! Here I need to work on protecting my back by pushing up through my lower back to keep proper form.

Birddog: Another challenging one! Birddog engages all muscles with a focus on functional core strength, balance, and coordination. I recommend this movement for cyclers and runners specifically to warm up the body before a workout. I need to work on lengthening my arm, closing my ribs, and keeping my hips aligned. With everything engaged, there is so much to focus on in this exercise!

Cat & Cow: Nothing feels better than Cat Cow stretches to improve mobility, posture, and balance!

Single-Leg Glute Bridge Kicks: I did this exercise on both legs to work on strength, balance, and mobility in my working leg and the opposite glute! Love this one!

Saw: This is a super challenging one for me! My posture and flexibility are not my strong suits, but I am working on both to increase overall strength and mobility. Meaning, I need to do more of the Saw despite struggling with it!

Single Leg Kicks: Here, you should make sure your legs are fully engaged to support hamstring strength and pull in your abs to engage the core! I need to strengthen and tighten my core here to not injure my lower back! Still working on this!

Swan: I love this for back extensions and stretching out my abs!

There were plenty of more classical pilates exercises that I work on daily and will share with you guys soon! Stay up to date by subscribing and I'll see you in my next post!

Xoxo,
